Feeling tempted to have a go at maintaining your own trees? Do you know the dangers that can be present when completing tree surgery? We think the most common dangers should be highlighted to ensure that people get professionals to do the works, as the risks of DIY arborism are simply too high!

Here are just a few of those dangers:

1) Gravity
When working with trees, the risk of falling is inevitably almost always there. Climbing up the limbs trying to cut dead branches is a risky business without the proper safety equipment. If you’re pruning and cutting branches away, once that tree limb starts falling gravity takes over and you have little or no control as to where it lands! What’s perhaps even more dangerous than falling tree limbs is a full tree removal. Where that entire tree falls is simply up to physics and gravity. If you don’t calculate these physics properly beforehand, you might as well be rolling dice to figure out where the tree will land. Don’t risk it.

2) Power Lines
In some cases, when a tree is planted in a less than ideal location such as near a lamp post or a power line, things can go wrong very quickly if supreme caution isn’t exercised. There are numerous safety procedures that tree experts are trained in, which they will follow religiously when dealing with this kind of situation. Even with those safety protocols, working with a tree that’s near a power line can still prove dangerous. This is definitely not a job for amateurs or the helpful have-a-go heroes next door!

3) Decaying Wood
It’s much harder to spot a tree that’s dying (or already dead) than most people think. Therefore, a lot of homeowners are often surprised when a tree on their property suddenly collapses and causes severe damage or injury. On the other side of the same coin, a healthy tree can sometimes look “dead”, when it’s merely going into hibernation. Don’t try and diagnose tree disease yourself, contact the experts and make sure you’re arming yourself with all the information before making a final decision on your trees.
